The Scenario
Your SAR team gets the call at 1800. Lost hiker, national forest, no cell coverage in the search area. You deploy four team members in a grid pattern across two square miles of mixed terrain. A fifth stays at the ICP and places a bare node at the highest accessible point before the team disperses.
All four searchers show live on the ICP commander's ATAK map. No check-in radio calls, he can see everyone moving in real time. When Team 2 finds a trail marker that matches the subject's last known route, they drop a pin on ATAK. It appears on every screen simultaneously, no relay needed.
The subject is found two hours in. The commander redirects Team 3 via text. Everyone is back at the trailhead before dark. The mesh ran the entire operation without a single cell tower.
